Toyota Engine Balance Shaft

The engine balance shaft (or balancer) is a device fitted to the crankshaft of an engine to reduce the vibration felt by the driver.
A balance shaft is an extra shaft that runs alongside the main crank and has a pair of weights at either end. The weights are usually in the form of a flywheel, which rotates at twice the speed of the main crank. The flywheel’s inertia helps offset any vibrations caused by imbalances in reciprocating weight or airflow, thus reducing vibration and noise.
A broken or malfunctioning balance shaft will cause these vibrations which can lead to other problems with your vehicle’s performance such as:
- Engine stalling or misfiring
- Rough noise, idling, and shuddering when running
- Intensified rattling noises with increased acceleration or cold start
- The illumination of the “check engine” light on the dashboard
The engine balance shaft symptoms are not just a nuisance for drivers, but they are also a safety issue.
The balance shaft gear is a component that has a lot of moving parts, and it can be very difficult to diagnose the problem. This is why you should bring your car in as soon as you notice any problems with the balance shaft gear.
