The steering rack is one of the most important parts of the steering system. It is used to convert the rotational motion of the steering wheel into a linear movement that moves the tires from side to side.
The steering rack consists of a series of shafts and gears that are connected to each other. The gear on one end turns in response to your turning motion on the other end, which can be either an electric motor or a hydraulic pump. The motion is then transferred down through another series of gears until it reaches the wheels and makes them turn left or right.
One of the most common symptoms of a bad steering rack is that the steering feels loose and has excessive play. This can lead to a driver overcompensating for the loose steering and can cause them to lose control.
A bad power steering rack assy can be caused by several things, including:
- Loose steering
- Steering wheel shakes
- Clunking noise
- Wheels don’t return to the center
- Excess slack
- Looseness in the steering wheel
- Vehicle unstable on highway
